What issues did the community share?

2 community members having a conversation with a Reference Group member. Above the 2 community members is a problem icon inside a speech bubble.

Reference Group members connected with the community to find out about issues that affect them.

A group of 5 participants. 2 of them are raising their hands.

This includes issues that affect participants.

Participants are people with disability who take part in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Members shared reports about these issues with the NDIA.

People from the NDIA also shared their response to some of these issues.

Supports and services

A clipboard with someone supporting someone and a list on it. There is a person looking worried next to the clipboard.

Reference Group members said people are worried about the NDIS support lists.

An NDIS document, a person supporting a participant, and a cross.

They’re worried about some supports no longer being NDIS supports.

A thumbs up icon next to an arrow pointing up inside a speech bubble.

Members talked about how group homes need to improve.

A group of 3 participants in front of a house.

Group homes are places where people with disability:

  • live together
  • get support.

A document with a house on it next to a poblem icon.

Members also talked about how there isn’t enough information about other housing options.

A person looking worried below a speech bubble with an NDIS planner in it.

Members said people are worried about NDIS planners.

An NDIS planner next to an NDIS plan with a pen writing on it.

An NDIS planner is someone who:

  • makes new NDIS plans
  • changes NDIS plans.

An NDIS plan.

An NDIS plan is a document that includes information about:

  • a participant and their goals
  • what support they receive from the NDIS
  • what the NDIS will pay for.

They are worried that NDIS planners are making it too hard for participants to use their NDIS plans.

New funding periods

A calendar with a money icon on it inside a thought bubble. There is a cross next to it.

Reference Group members said they don’t feel like they had a chance to share their thoughts about the new funding periods.

A stack of 3 calendars with a money icon on the front. There is a tick icon next to the calendars.

Funding periods tell participants:

  • when part of their funding can be used
  • how long their funding needs to last.

An NDIS document with a money icon next to it.

Funding is money from someone’s NDIS plan that pays for the supports they need.

Members are worried that the new funding periods mean some participants:

  • will lose supports they use now

A hospital building with an arrow pointing towards the front door.

  • might have to move to get the care they need.

For example, into a hospital.

Members asked the NDIA to only use short funding periods:

  • when there is proof that it is hard for a participant to manage their funding

  • after talking about funding periods with the participant.

An NDIS plan document next to a badge that says 'new'.

The NDIA said that only new NDIS plans might have shorter funding periods.

A stop icon next to a change icon.

This means funding periods don’t have to change for current NDIS plans.

A pair of hands holding a document with an information icon on it. There is a tick next to the document.

The NDIA also said they have shared the right information with the people these changes affect.

This includes:

A group of 5 participants. 2 of them are raising their hands.

  • participants

A family of 2 adults, a child and a baby.

  • families and carers of participants.

The way the NDIA communicates

An NDIA worker holding a clipboard. There is a speech bubble above them.

Reference Group members said they’re sometimes worried about the way the NDIA communicates.

A person looking upset next to a problem icon.

People have told members the way the NDIA communicates:

  • sometimes upsets them
  • makes them feel stressed.

An email icon, a hand holding a pen, a speech bubble, and a video icon.

Members said the NDIA should try to communicate in a different way.

2 NDIA workers with a laptop.

The NDIA said they will look at how they explain things when they communicate.

Specialist disability accommodation (SDA)

A house with a ramp next to a disability icon.

Specialist disability accommodation (SDA) is housing for people with disability who need extra support most of the time.

An accessibility icon, a hand holding a wrench, and a house with a ramp.

Reference Group members said some new SDA housing became accessible after it was built.

A person using a wheelchair next to someone on a couch.

When housing is accessible it:

  • supports what you need
  • is easy to move around in.

A builder wearing a hard hat and high vis top next to a money icon and an arrow pointing down.

Some builders are finding ways to do this because it’s cheaper.

A blueprint plan for a house with an accessibility icon next to it. There is a cross next to the plan.

But this means some builders are not designing SDA to be accessible from the start.
